For many years tradition steel reinforcement has been used in ferroconcrete structures. However, it has certain limitations. And all these limitations are the result of production material deficiencies. The main limitation of steel reinforcement is chemical and normal corrosion susceptibility. The are other limitations, the main of them are as following: weight, electroconductivity, high thermal conductivity.

Polymer reinforcement (also called composite) does not have all mentioned limitations. This type of structure is widely spread all over the world, including Japan, where it is used for concrete structures reinforcement with high seismic stability requirements. By its composition the polymer reinforcement is subdivided into glass-plastic and basalt. By its construction it is bar-shaped structure and it could be used with structural shape and plain rebar. Our plant is specialized in production of composite glass-reinforced plastic (GRP). The composite basalt-plastic reinforcement has higher strength, but it is considerably expensive than GRP.

 

Application spheres

Composite glass-reinforced plastic (GRP), produced by “Baltic Plast” Co Ltd. by TC 2296-001-76174300-2010 and “Plast-Composite” Co. Ltd. by TC 2296-001-30604955-2012, is intended for use in industrial-civil construction:

  • Foundations lower than grade level (at present time GRP is the best reinforcement material for strip foundation construction and bed plates filling);
  • Lighting supports, pylons of PTL (Power Transmission Lines), isolating cross arms of PTLs;
  • Road construction: for strengthening of road bed, bridges and protective covers;
  • For strengthening of the following pbaructs: road and sidewalk thin slabs, fence plates, kerbstones, piers and supports, railway sleepers;
  • In structures, that are used under speeded up steel reinforcement and concrete corrosion conditions (berths, dry docks, strengthening of embankments by concrete, in structures subject to corrosion and dynamical loads impact under operation)

 

Products

The standard form of product is the reinforcing bar of 6 or 12 meters length. The 100 meters length coils (hanks) could be made if the reinforcement diameter is up to 8 mm (inclusively). For bars of 10 mm diameter the coil (hank) length is 60 meters. Production of different length bars and coils is possible under the agreement with client.

The reinforcement could be made as plain or periodical profile or structural shape: GRP periodical profile is used instead of steel A-III (A-400) class reinforcement; GRP plain profile is used instead of steel A-I (A-240) reinforcement;

 

The main advantages of polymer GRP are following:

  • It is 2-2,5 times stronger than traditional steel reinforcement of the same diameter. Therefore, the reinforcement wire mesh size could be reduced (if GRP and steel reinforcement diameters are equal) or kept the same with application of GRP of less, but “full-strength”* diameter. In both cases the additional advantage is the considerable reduction of ready-made structure weight.
  • Chemical and corrosion resistance. High level of water, alkaline and acidic environment resistance. Ranked among 1st group of chemical resistant materials. This fact guarantees the durability and lack of cracking or fracturing of reinforced concrete structures as the result of internal stresses, rising under corrosion or corrosion swelling, unlike the steel reinforcement.
  • Lower thermal conductivity in comparison with steel. The thermal conductivity of glass-plastic or basalt-plastic materials is more than 10 times lower than for the steel. Therefore, the composite building reinforcement is not the cold transmission element of reinforced concrete structure, unlike the steel one.
  • The thermal expansion coefficient is the same as for concrete, that ensures the lack of reinforcement break and crack formation in concrete under temperature difference impact.
  • It is the insulator (does not conduct electric current), magnet-lucent, radiolucent material.
  • Lower density and as the result 3,5-4 times lower weight (unlike steel reinforcement) in case of equal diameter , or 10 times lower under “full-strength” diameter application.
  • It is cheaper than steel reinforcement at the cost of same strength lower diameter application (“full-strength” diameter). The table of “full-strength” replacement

The “full-strength” diameter is the nominal composite reinforcement diameter, ensuring the equal strength with specified steel reinforcement diameter.

Weight and volume economic benefit

As a rule, selecting between the products, the consumer compares only the prices, supposing that transportation costs benefit could not be considerable. We’ll provide you the simple calculation to prove the this opinion is not correct. Let’s assume that you need 40 000 running meters of 12 mm diameter А-III (А400С) class steel reinforcement to fill the foundation plate. The calculations are given in the following table:

Compare the first and the last lines of table. After steel reinforcement replace with composite one with “full-strength” diameter the volume will be 2,25 less, and the weight will be lowered by 12,72 times! The cargo from the first line could not be transported by one truck (the truck maximum weight limit is 20 000 tons). The last line cargo could be transported even by small truck “Valdai” (if the cargo is transported in hanks/coils or in fold in two as horseshoe 6 m lashes). Do you see how sizable the transportation benefit could be? Please not that the overall weight of structure will also be reduced by 35 160 kg.

You can also add to this the possibility to order reinforcement bars of different length, that is convenient for you. For example if you cover your foundation plate by 48 meter “mesh” we can provide you 48 or 96 m reinforcement bars rolled in coils. In this case you are economizing on lack of bar joints and waste products. Moreover, you’ll speed up the rebar tie-in process at the cost exclusion of short bars connection into one long.

The reinforcement cost gain is 403 040 rub ( 36,42% of economy):

 

The weight gain was 12,72 times lower, or 3000 kg instead of 38160 kg:

 

The volume gain was 2,25 times lower, or 8,04 m3 instead of 18,09 m3.

The prices of FRP and GRP

NOTE! Please take into consideration the following factors under comparison of steel reinforcement and GRP prices:

1. Don not compare the prices in tons! Because of different density, even with the same diameter, 1 ton of composite reinforcement contains 5 times more bars (in running meters) than the steel one. E.g. 1 ton of composite reinforcement contains 21 276 run. m. of Ø6mm bars, and only 4505 run. m. of steel reinforcement bars. The correct way to compare prices is to use the table “full-strength replacement”, given in the text before.

2. It is not recommended to compare the steel and composite reinforcement of same diameters. because the composite one is 2,5 times more durable than steel one! The correct way is to compare the “full strength” diameters (given in the table above). E.g. the composite reinforcement of 8 mm diameter corresponds to 12 mm diameter steel reinforcement by strength.
