In this section we publish the most frequently asked questions about composite GRP application and give you the answers to them.

 

 

 Can we measure the amount of FRP in tons?

 

Theoretically, the measurement of FRP amount in tons is possible, but practically not. It should be remembered, that GRP density is multiple times less than steel density. Till recent time the steel was practically unique material for reinforcement production and there were no alternatives with different density. In this situation, the measurement in tons was the generally accepted method. First of all, because by measuring the reinforcement amount in tons instead of meters, people intended to use the numbers with less digit places, that allowed to economize ink and paper. For example, 56306 running meters of 12 mm steel A-III class reinforcement weight 50 tons, and the number 50 is much easier to operate than 56306. Secondly, traditionally the price of steel reinforcement is identified from its weight, not depending on diameter. And it’s the second reason, why construction engineers are used to ask: “Give us 1 ton of your reinforcement, please!”

But at the end, every framework of every structure consists of concrete length bars, and not of abstract reinforcement of certain weight. The measurement of reinforcement amount in meters is less comfortable but more correct. And now let’s imagine the situation when you need 50 tons of 12 mm A-III class reinforcement and ask the company the following question: “I ned 50 tons of reinforcement. What is the price per 1 ton?”. This question is very complicated for manufacturer, and we will explain why it is not correct:

  • The prices of FRP mostly depend on its diameter, not weight! And there is no mentioning of diameter in the question;
  • 50 tons of 12 mm A-III class steel reinforcement contain 56306 meters, 50 tons of 12 mm GRP reinforcement contain 295858 meters, at the same time GRP will have 2,5 – 3,0 times higher tensile strength. Do you need this amount of GRP with this density?
  • Taking into account the fact, that under equal diameters FRP reinforcement has considerably higher tensile strength (ultimate tensile strength is 1100 MPa), in comparison with A-III class reinforcement (ultimate tensile strength is 390 MPa) the “full-strength” replacement term was introduced. The full strength replacement is the substitution of steel reinforcement by FRP one with less diameter but same tensile strength. In case of equal weight and equal diameters GRP reinforcement will be 5,25 times longer than steel one. If the weight is the same and diameters are “full strength” GRP reinforcement will be 11,84 times longer than steel one.

If the GRP manufacturer gives you the answer on your question without any clarification, you will be shocked by heard price. At the moment of this text writing the prices were as following: 50 tons of steel reinforcement = 1 300 000 rub (approx. 26000 rub/ ton), 50 tons of 12 mm GRP = 9 763 314 rub (33 rub/run.m). In other words you were informed about the price of 295858 meters of reinforcement instead of required 56306 meters, and the strength of this reinforcement is 3 times higher than steel one, you were planning to replace. Bu you just received the concrete answer to concrete question you asked before. Have a look at the table below. What is the solution? The ideal variant is to convert the required amount of reinforcement in meters. The question could be one of the following:

  • I need 295 858 meters of 12 mm A-III class steel reinforcement. What material and amount can replace it and what is the price?
  • I need 50 tons of 12 mm A-III class steel reinforcement. What material and amount can replace it and what is the price?
  • I want to replace 295 858 meters of 12 mm A-III class steel reinforcement with 8 mm GRP reinforcement (tensile strength 3 times higher than required). How much will it cost?
  • I want to replace 295 858 meters of 12 mm A-III class steel reinforcement with 8 mm GRP reinforcement (tensile strength is equal to required). How much will it cost?
